Siedl/Cao is a composer-, performance- and sound artist group from Austria.
Cao Thanh Lan and Gregor Siedl have been collaborating intensively in the field of contemporary electronic and instrumental music, musical theater and sound art since 2013.

With their recent sound artworks and transdisciplinary projects, many of which work with site-specific and interactive elements, they examine the relationship and balance between visual and acoustic elements, nature and artificiality, human and machine, and the resulting intentionality and non-intentionality.

Works by Siedl/Cao have been presented at international art institutions, festivals and venues, including: Ars Electronica – Cloud of Sound Linz, BIFF – Busan International Film Festival 2022,

On their music and sound art projects, they work without reservations with a wide variety of natural and artificial sound generators such as sensor-controlled self-referential systems, traffic noise, bird calls, AI- supported text-to-speech applications, kitchen appliances, food and living plants, modular synthesizers, air pumps, servo motors, actuators, Compression springs, adhesive tape, light and shadow, clarinet, saxophone, piano, daxophone, prepared zither and their extended playing techniques for a wide variety of sound spaces such as opera houses, theatres, living rooms, university lecture halls, galleries and in public spaces.

Gregor Siedl was born in Klosterneuburg in 1977. He completed his musical education as a Master of Arts in jazz saxophone at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels.

He engages in sound art, experimental music theater and multidisciplinary art projects.
His main interest is artistic expression through sound, its interaction with visual elements and the resulting areas of tension. In his current projects he deals with participatory sound sculptures, artificial intelligence, nature and technology, “natural” radio emissions and DIY electronics.

Gregor Siedl is a founding member of several ensembles and long-term collaborations: Siedl/Cao, Cao Keller Siedl, Junk Orbit, Parallel Asteroid, ZICLA, DOKO and Osmosis Project.

2013 Founding of Siedl/Cao as an artist collective and beginning of intensive collaboration with the musician, composer and sound artist Cao Thanh Lan.

2012-2013 he represented Austria as a member of the renowned EU project “European Saxophone Ensemble” in which 12 extraordinary saxophonists from 12 EU nations took part (artistic direction: Guillaume Orti (FR))

In 2018-2019 he received the “New Austrian Sound of Music” award in the contemporary music category with Duo Siedl/Cao from the BMEIA funding program in cooperation with MICA-Austria.

The music theater production “The fifth cardinal direction” by Siedl/Cao was selected in 2018 by a specialist jury (Guy Coolen – Operadagen Rotterdam, Veronica Kaup-Hasler – Kulturmanagerin, Thomas Desi – Musiktheatertage Wien) alongside productions by Klaus Lang and Peter Jakober as one of three outstanding ones Music theater productions from Austria selected for the “Austrian Music Export” program.
