Central to this work is the concept of the fifth cardinal direction, which can be found in ancient Asian, Native American, and Indo-European cultures. Symbolizing the center, the present moment, and the inner self, it serves as the thematic backbone of the work, guiding viewers on an introspective journey through life’s transformative milestones. The fifth cardinal direction is inspired by the rich vocal music, sonic landscapes and ritualism of ethnic minorities in Northern Vietnam.
The fifth cardinal direction exists currently in two forms – a music theater of 45 minutes and a 5-channel video sound installation. The video installation was exhibited at Manzi Art Space, Hanoi, February – March 2025 and the music-theatre was premiered at Hanoi National Opera House in December 2017.
